Before a race is run, it already has a shape. Somebody will lead, somebody will sit second or third, and somebody will be ridden for one late run. Most of the time you can predict who does what, because horses are creatures of habit and jockeys ride to instructions that rarely change. A pace map is nothing more than writing that prediction down before the off.

It matters because race shape decides races far more often than the form book admits. A horse beaten two lengths after sitting last in a crawl has not run badly; a horse that won by two lengths after being handed a soft, uncontested lead has not necessarily run well. The result column records who passed the post first. The pace map explains why.

The numbers are not subtle. Analysis of British Flat handicaps from 2021 to 2025 by Geegeez found that horses which led early won 16.09% of the time, prominent racers 12.88%, midfield runners 9.92%, and hold-up horses just 8.32%. Front-runners win roughly twice as often as closers, and the effect is strongest in sprints, where early leaders in 5f handicaps won over 20% of their races. That is not a quirk. It is the single most persistent bias in Flat racing, and mapping it takes ten minutes per race.

The four running styles

Every runner in a race can be filed under one of four headings.

Front-runner. Wants to lead, and usually does. Jumps out, is in front within a furlong or two, and stays there until challenged. In comments-in-running you will see "made all", "led", "soon led", "set steady pace".

Prominent. Races in the first third of the field without leading — second, third, fourth, tracking the leader. Comments read "prominent", "tracked leader", "chased leader", "raced in second".

Midfield. Settles in the middle, neither pressing nor dropped out. "Mid-division", "in touch", "raced in midfield".

Held up (hold-up closer). Deliberately restrained in the rear half, delivered late. "Held up", "in rear", "dwelt, held up", "steadied, waited with". The style with the worst overall strike rate — and the one most dependent on things going right up front.

Most horses are consistent. Look at the last four to six runs: if a horse has led or disputed the lead in three of its last four starts, it is a front-runner today unless something obvious has changed — a step up in trip, a new yard, a headgear switch, or a jockey booking known for patience. Racecards that print comment lines make this quick; some services do the coding for you. Geegeez publishes pace scores per runner, and Timeform records an Early Position Figure (EPF) for every run, where 1 is a front-runner and higher numbers mean further back. Sectional and tracking data from Total Performance Data, published free on At The Races and on Racing TV, tells you exactly where a horse was at each call, stripping out the vagueness of a race-reader's comment.

Building the map

Take tomorrow's card. Pick a handicap — pace maps earn their keep most in handicaps, where fields are big and tactics matter. Then work through the runners one at a time.

  1. Code each horse's last four runs: L for led, P for prominent, M for midfield, H for held up. Ignore runs over the wrong trip or in tiny fields where everyone was "prominent" by default.
  2. Note the draw, because a front-runner drawn wide on a turning track has to burn petrol to get across, and may not bother. See our course-by-course draw guide for where this bites.
  3. Adjust for today: trip changes, first-time blinkers (often a "be positive" signal), apprentice claims, and any jockey with a known style.
  4. Count the leaders. This is the whole point. Zero, one, or several — each produces a different race.

Here is a worked example: a hypothetical but realistic 6f handicap, ten runners, at a sharp track.

The map tells you the story before it happens. Two confirmed front-runners, and the second of them, Ember Watch, is drawn wide and must use up energy to press Alderley Flame. Three prominent racers will keep them honest. That is a contested pace, and it is very good news for Copper Fox, Glen Affric and Jura Sound — the closers — and for the track-position of Bantry Boy, who gets a tow into the race on the rail. If Ember Watch had been drawn in stall 1 instead, or absent altogether, the reading flips completely: Alderley Flame gets an easy lead and becomes the most dangerous horse in the race at almost any price.

The most important question on a pace map is not "who leads?" but "how many want to?" One willing leader is an advantage. Three is a trap — for all of them.

What a lone leader is worth

A lone leader — one confirmed front-runner in a field of pressers and closers — is the best free information in racing. It dictates its own fractions, saves energy on the turns, meets no traffic, and forces everyone else to come and get it. Dave Renham's study of around 3,000 British Flat handicaps for Geegeez found that front-runners handed a soft, uncontested lead won roughly two and a half times as often as hold-up horses in the same races — and in 5f handicaps the multiple was nearer three and a half. When the early pace was contested, that advantage shrank dramatically.

This is where the pace map talks to the market. A habitual front-runner priced at 7/2 in a race where nothing else wants the lead is a materially better proposition than the same horse at the same price in a race with two other speedballs drawn either side of it. The market prices the horse; the map prices the race. Lone leaders are also a common ingredient in results the market never saw coming — the 16/1 "shock" that made all was frequently no shock at all to anyone who had counted the leaders. It cuts the other way too: a short-priced hold-up horse in a paceless race is carrying an invisible weight, a theme we return to in spotting fake favourites.

When the pace collapses

The mirror image. Put three or four confirmed front-runners in the same sprint and they will take each other on, run the first half too fast, and empty out together in the final furlong. The comments afterwards read "led, weakened", "disputed lead, faded" — a row of them. The beneficiaries are the closers, and this is essentially the only scenario in which the hold-up horse's 8% base rate becomes something much healthier. A pace collapse doesn't make closers good; it makes the front end bad, and someone has to pass them.

Two practical notes. First, collapses are more likely on soft or heavy ground, where early exertion costs more — worth cross-referencing with going changes and what the market does about them. Second, a projected collapse is a probability, not a promise. Jockeys can see the same map you can, and sometimes two of the three speed horses take a pull and the burn-up never happens. That is the honest limit of this whole exercise: you are forecasting behaviour, and behaviour sometimes surprises.

Where the track turns the dial

Pace matters everywhere, but the track configuration decides how much.

Chester is the extreme case: a tight, continuously turning circuit with a home straight of about 240 yards. Renham's Chester study found 5f front-runners winning roughly three races in ten, against a national sprint front-runner rate of about one in five — and low-drawn early leaders doing better still. There is simply no room to come from behind.

Catterick is another sharp, undulating track where 5f front-runners hold one of the strongest records in Britain and hold-up horses one of the weakest, per Geegeez's course analysis. Musselburgh shows a strong front-running bias over 7f and a mile. Wolverhampton, with its sharp bends and a straight under two furlongs, rewards horses that can hold a handy position; Timeform's all-weather analysis groups it with Southwell and Chelmsford as tracks where patient tactics are generally not seen to best effect.

Then the exceptions, which matter just as much. Newcastle's all-weather track — a long, wide, stiff straight rising through the final quarter — gives hold-up horses a considerably better record than any other all-weather venue, because those who press on too early get run down. Galloping, uphill finishes like Ascot and stiff tracks like Carlisle similarly punish over-eager fractions. The rule of thumb: sharp and turning amplifies front-runners; long, stiff and straight forgives closers. Never apply a pace read without asking which kind of track you are at.

Pace and the draw compound

The two biases multiply. At Chester over 5f, stalls 1–4 accounted for nearly three-quarters of winners in Renham's 2009–2019 sample, and the low-drawn horse that also led won far more often than either factor alone would suggest. A front-runner drawn wide at a track like this often can't use its weapon; a front-runner drawn on the fence gets the rail, the lead, and first run at a 240-yard straight. Always read the map and the draw together — a "good draw" for a closer and a "good draw" for a speed horse are different stalls at many courses.

Doing it on tomorrow's card

A workable routine, ten to fifteen minutes per race:

  1. Choose handicaps of eight or more runners — small fields produce muddling tactical races that maps read poorly.
  2. Code every runner's last four runs from the comments or a pace tool; check the raw positions against TPD sectionals on At The Races or Racing TV where available.
  3. Count the confirmed leaders. Zero or one: upgrade the speed. Three or more: upgrade the closers, especially at stiff tracks.
  4. Overlay draw and course configuration.
  5. Check for change signals — first-time headgear, trip switches, a yard hitting form (see trainer form cycles) — that might turn a midfield type into a leader.
  6. Write down your expected shape before looking at the prices, then see where the market disagrees with you.

The method is identical on Irish cards — a tight, undulating track like Sligo and a stiff uphill finish like Leopardstown's reward the same reading — but sectional coverage in Ireland is thinner than in Britain, so the comments-in-running and your own replay-watching carry more of the load.

Afterwards, watch the replay and mark your map right or wrong. The feedback loop is how you get better at this, and it costs nothing.

What a pace map can and cannot do

Be clear-eyed about the size of the edge. Reading pace well shifts your understanding of a race a little; it does not overturn the mathematics of betting, and losing remains the normal outcome for most punters over time. The bookmakers' margin doesn't disappear because you counted the leaders correctly, jockeys improvise, stalls play up, and a projected lone leader sometimes misses the break and the whole map goes in the bin.

What a pace map does do is make you a better reader of races — before they are run and after. You will stop overrating horses flattered by a soft lead, stop writing off closers beaten by a crawl, and start seeing the difference between a bad run and a bad race shape. Racing is decided in lengths; most of those lengths are won or lost in the first three furlongs, not the last. If you take one habit from the Academy, make it this: never look at a result again without asking what the shape did to it.
